Wonder Woman
Before I really got into comics, Superman was an invulnerable platitude, but Wonder Woman was a ghost. She was, unfortunately, nothing to me. I missed out on Pèrez’s run. By the time Messner-Loebs’ run started, I was “all in” on Batman, and it probably doesn’t get enough credit. I’d like to read it some day. Then John Byrne took over, and, well, I just don’t like his stuff. I dabbled in Eric Luke’s and Phil Jimenez’s runs, but nothing with Diana fully clicked with me until Greg Rucka’s first run. I enjoyed the hell out of his Batman work and was quite glad to follow him on another character. It was absolutely rewarding. There were some other writers after him, but I avoided WW until Gail Simone took over, and it’s funny and delightful. Later, Rucka was asked to update WW’s origin for DCs Rebirth, and that’s when I realized that Wonder Woman was the HEART of DC Comics.

John Byrne
I’m torn, because Byrne’s work leaves me colder than a blizzard in Antarctica. On the other hand, he gives us the new Wonder Girl, Cassandra Sandsmark, who joins Young Justice. I probably shouldn’t recommend what I haven’t read.

Sadly, no. Despite Cliff Chang’s great artwork. Here’s why:

DC Rebirth
The updated origin presented here in volume two, “Year One”, is the best WW story I have ever read. It’s in contention for the finest superhero story I have ever read. It is thoughtful, nuanced, full of affection and care.

I cannot recommend Grant Morrison’s WW Earth One series of graphic novels. I’d really, really like to, because Yanick Paquette’s artwork is amazing. But Morrison’s writing here isn’t as informed or nuanced as they’d clearly like to be when it comes issues of gender and racial oppression. It’s like they've read some of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ work one night and thought they could handle writing like him.
